Kedah is one of the oldest states in Malaysia and is a land of unique natural beauty surrounded by lush greenery and padi fields. Merdeka Beach
Kedah also has many beaches of superb beauty. Located west of the state are beaches such as the Merdeka beach where visitors can unwind under swaying palms and enjoy the crystal clear waters and white sandy beaches.

Langkawi Island
The tropical island of Langkawi consists of a group of 99 islands that are blessed with a fascinating heritage of fabulous myths and legend. As a natural paradise, the islands are perhaps unmatched in South East Asia in terms of its beauty. Visitors will find beaches with numerous activities such as a host of water sports, enchanting marine life beneath the water and caves with stunning stalactites and stalagmites. Accommodation will not be a problem as visitors can find accommodations of all kinds, from those that cater for the rich and famous to backpacking adventurers. Langkawi is also a duty free island.

Lembah Bujang Archaelogical Park and Museum
Lembah Bujang is the site of one of the earliest Hindu-Buddhist civilisations in Southeast Asia, dating back to the fifth century. Temple ruins dot the area stretching from Gunung Jerai to Sungai Muda, the most significant being the Candi Bukit Batu Pahat, which has been restored. These temple ruins and numerous archaelogical finds like ceramic and pottery sherds, stoneware and carvings, and gemstones and beads are now under the care of the Museum.

Bukit Kayu Hitam
lThe border town of Bukit Kayu Hitam is located in the northern part of Kedah and is the main entrance to Thailand on the West Coast. Visitors will be able to find a duty-free complex here in the town. For those that love a bit of relaxation, Bukit Kayu Hitam offers a newly constructed golf course of international standard with 36 holes.

Mahathir Birthplace House
The birthplace and childhood home of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad, this traditional attap and wooden house also displays historical memoirs and memorabilia.

Wat Siam Nikrodharam
Given Kedah's history and its close proximity to Thailand, the latter's in fluence on Buddhists is readily discernable. The local Chinese community donated money to build this Thai Buddhist temple in the Siamese architectural style. A golden Garuda suspends over the main entry. The temple's outer walls contain inscriptions of Buddha's teachings in three languages.

Perlis can be reached by train from Kuala Lumpur and Butterworth (near Penang) on Keretapi Tanah Melayu's Senandung Langkawi, as well as from Bangkok, Thailand on the State Railways of Thailand's International Express. By Bus
|
Interstate long distance express buses to/from Kuala Lumpur, Butterworth and other destinations arrive/depart from the Bukit Lagi bus terminal in Kangar. Kuala Perlis and Padang Besar also have long distance bus connections.
Regular buses run between Kangar and Alor Star.

By Road
|
* To/from Thailand: There are two land border crossings - Padang Besar and Wang Kelian, 35km and 40km north of Kangar respectively.
* To/from other parts of Malaysia: The main road into Perlis is Route 7 which links Alor Star, Kedah with Kangar and Padang Besar at the Thai-Malaysia border. Motorists using the North-South Expressway should exit at the Changloon interchange (north of Changloon town) and proceed along the Changloon-Kuala Perlis Expressway to Perlis.
